About the team
.
We are the Porthleven Morris Men, which means exactly what it says on the packet; we are Men who dance Morris and are based in Porthleven. We are a relatively new team, having formed in Autumn 2006 from both experienced and novice dancers. Some of us decided there was not enough Morris dancing going on in Cornwall, unlike the rest of the country, so we decided to form another team.
During the winter we concentrate on developi
ng a repertoire for display in the summer. If you are interested in having a go, the winter is the best time to learn if you are inexperienced, but we will accept learners at any time. Of course if you have danced before or play an instrument then we would still want to meet you. We practice every Monday in the winter at 7:30pm in Porthleven Football Club or every other week in the summer. Its probably best to email me first just in case we have cancelled for some reason.
Porthleven Morris Men are an Associate member of The Morris Ring and dance mainly traditional Cotswold Morris together with some evolved dances. We believe that the traditional dances should be respected and performed, but realise that natural evolution must be allowed for otherwise the Morris becomes a static dinosaur. This is reflected in our choice of costume and our style of dancing.
We also have links with the other Morris teams in the west of Cornwall, The Blue Anchor Morris Men from Helston and Carn Brea from Redruth. Apart from these the only other Cotswold Morris team in Cornwall is Trigg Morris Men based in Bodmin.

You may ask “are there any Cornish Morris Dances?” The answer is that there are a few parish records relating to payments made to local teams way back in the 17th Century and an article in an 18th Century magazine, which links the Morris to the Helston Furry Dance. Unfortunately no other records or references to the Dance have survived.
You will see us dancing out during the summer at local pubs and at Porthleven Lifeboat Day to which we make a donation.
If you are interested in what we do and would like to try it, speak to one of the team members or contact us via the links on this site.
If you are curious, like what you have seen on this site and fancy having a go either as a musician or a dancer (or even as a supporter), then please contact Steve Williams on the links given in this website.
